Modern cars contain thousands of moving parts, and sometimes it is a wonder they work so reliably. But then without any notice, something could fail and leave you stranded far from any help. Other times, you might make a mistake that leaves you with your keys locked in the car, your battery drained, or your fuel tank empty.

These are the times you need some type of roadside assistance, and there are three ways that you can get it. First, you can just make it up as you go, relying on your mobile phone to locate services. But this is both unreliable and time consuming. In addition, you may end up paying inflated rates from local providers who know that they have you in a bind.

Another way is to purchase membership in an automotive club which provides these services. This can be an attractive option, but it is one more bill that you have to pay every year.

Finally, you can choose a credit card that offers you some type of emergency roadside assistance. Many credit cards offer a roadside dispatch service that can locate and send help. However, you have to pay for any assistance that you receive. Some premium reward credit cards feature roadside assistance programs that also pay for the cost of minor services such as a jump start, changing a flat tire, or towing up to 10 miles.

Here are four credit cards that offer roadside dispatch or roadside assistance services.

1. The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express comes with a Premium Roadside Assistance program that offers minor roadside services at no additional cost, up to four times per calendar year. It includes towing up to 10 miles, plus $3 per additional mile. Other services include winching, jump starts, flat tire change, lockout service (when your key is in your vehicle), and delivery of  up to two gallons of fuel.

This card currently offers new applicants 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 on new purchases within three months of account opening. It offers 3x points on your choice of one of five categories including airfare, gas, shipping, and advertising. You also earn 2x points in the remaining four categories and one point per dollar everywhere else. There is a $175 annual fee for this card that is waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees.

2. The Plum card from American Express
Cardholders of the Plum Card receive the American Express Premium Roadside Assistance program. This also includes minor roadside services at no additional cost, up to four times per calendar year, such as towing (up to 10 miles), jump starts, winching, flat tire changes, lockout service, and delivery of up to two gallons of fuel.

This unique card gives you the option to pay in full each month or carry a balance up to 60 days with no interest charges. When you pay in full, you receive a 1.5% Early Pay discount on your charges. There is a $250 annual fee that is waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees.
