Which Credit Cards Have the Best Mobile Apps?

Since smartphones have become commonplace, more and more people are turning to their mobile device to manage their bank and credit card accounts, which leads many to wonder: which credit cards have the best mobile apps?

J.D. Power completed a consumer survey about banking in 2018 and determined that the highest-rated mobile credit card apps are offered by American Express, Discover and Capital One–the three issuers that also rank highest in customer satisfaction.

American Express
American Express offers card members an app that is attractive and user-friendly. Users can manage all of their accounts from one app and log-in with their fingerprint, if their device supports that technology. Other perks of the app include:

  • The ability to view recent activity, statements, payment details and your FICO score
  • Pay It Plan It accessibility
  • The ability to review membership benefits
  • Access to discounts on accommodations, merchandise and dining

Users can also set-up alerts from the mobile app to remind them when payments are due or to alert them to possible fraudulent activity. Both business and personal credit card account holders can use the app.

One of the most unique aspects of Discover’s app is the “Freeze it” feature. Freeze it allows users to lock their account to prevent transactions in the event their card is lost or stolen. The app also allows cardholders to:

  • Use a passcode or fingerprint to log-in
  • View and manage all aspects of their accounts
  • Redeem rewards
  • Notify Discover if they are traveling so that their card is not declined

Discover cardholders can also access their FICO credit score via the app.

Capital One
The third most popular credit card app is the Capital One mobile app. Unlike American Express and Discover, Capital One also offers banking products, such as savings and checking accounts, so users can access these accounts from the app as well. If you have a checking account with Capital One, you can use the app for bill paying or check deposit. The app also allows account holders to:

  • Redeem rewards
  • View transaction details
  • Log-in with their fingerprint or use the SureSwipe feature and report fraudulent activity

Capital One app users can also check their CreditWise credit score from the app.

A word of precaution
If you do use a mobile app for credit card management or banking, make sure your phone is locked with a passcode, your fingerprint or facial recognition. In addition, use the most robust security features offered by the app. You want to make sure that, if your phone is lost or stolen, thieves will not have access to your account information.
