Visa and SiriusXM Announce Plan for In-Vehicle Payments

Yesterday, Visa and SiriusXM unveiled their plan for in-vehicle payment solutions. The new development would allow consumers to pay for gas, coffee, parking, tolls, and an array of other products through their vehicle dashboards.

The SiriusXM e-wallet would be available for vehicles equipped with SiriusXM connected vehicle services. In the video promoting the e-wallet, Visa highlights some of the possibilities to come from the partnership. This includes opening a vehicle door with fingerprint scanning, setting vehicle preferences with mirror-mounted iris scanning, finding a nearby fuel station, pre-paying for fuel, ordering coffee on-the-go, and more.

Visa’s integrated payment platform will utilize voice and touchscreen commands. This reduces the risk of distracted driving and provides more flexibility for the services.

Payments are backed by the Visa Token Service, which creates a unique “token” for each transaction. The token contains encrypted payment information, so the merchant never has access to the card number or other data.

SiriusXM will show its new suite of in-vehicle interfaces to automotive manufacturers in 2019. Currently, there is no information when the features will be available in the vehicles.
