Top American Express Credit Cards for 2021

American Express has one of the more prestigious names in the credit card industry. But many people don’t know that it began as a freight forwarding company in 1850, helping people transport their possessions long distances. A century later, they introduced the first charge card, and have since become the world’s largest global payments network. American Express made a mark in the credit card industry by offering significant rewards to their cardholders, a practice that continues today.

Here are some of the top credit cards from American Express:

Top Features:

Offering responsible credit without fees, Petal 2 is Petal’s most advanced card. It has no fees of any kind, is designed to help you build credit, and with cash back on every swipe, competes with other prime rewards cards.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is currently offering new applicants $100 in cash back in the form of a statement credit after spending $1,000 within six months of account opening. In addition, new cardholders earn 20% cash back on Amazon.com purchases made on the card within the first six months of card membership, up to $200 back. Cardholders earn 3% cash back at supermarkets on up to $6,000 spent each year, 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and at select U.S. department stores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed for a statement credit. New cardholders also receive 15 months of 0% APR financing on purchases. There is no annual fee for this card but there is a 2.7% foreign transaction fee.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

If you spend a lot more on your credit card and you are willing to pay a $95 annual fee after the first year of membership, then the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express could be more advantageous than the Blue Cash Everyday® Card. The Preferred Card offers new applicants $300 in cash back in the form of a statement credit after spending $3,000 within six months of account opening. Cardholders earn 6% cash back on select streaming subscriptions in the United States as well as 6% at supermarkets on up to $6,000 spent each year (then 1%). In addition, a card member will receive 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and transit costs, including taxis, rideshare, parking, tolls, trains and buses; and 1% cash back on all other purchases. New cardholders also receive 12 months of 0% APR financing on purchases. There is a 2.7% foreign transaction fee on this card.

American Express Cash Magnet® Card

The American Express Cash Magnet® Card is another solid cash back card. Cardholders receive a straight 1.5% cash back on all purchases which is made in the form of Reward Dollars redeemed for statement credits. American Express is giving new applicants $200 in cash back in the form of a statement credit after spending $1,000 within three months of account opening. New cardholders also receive 15 months of 0% APR financing on purchases. There is no annual fee for this card but there is a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%.

American Express® Gold Card

The American Express® Gold Card is one of the most attractive travel cards on the market. While its $250 annual fee can deter some people, new cardholders can see how the card might quickly pay for itself. New customers receive 60,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $4,000 on eligible purchases with the card in the first three months. You will earn 4X Membership Rewards® points when you dine at any restaurant, including takeout and delivery; as well as 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 per year in purchases (then 1X). In addition, cardholders will earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on any flight booked directly with an airlines or on amextravel.com. Every cardholder receives a $100 hotel credit to spend on dining, spa and resort activities, in addition to a room upgrade if one is available, when you book a stay of at least two consecutive nights with American Express Travel. You will also earn up to $10 total in statement credits each month when you pay with the Gold Card at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shack locations, but you must enroll in the program. There are no foreign transaction fees when using the Gold Card.
