Tips For Keeping Your Credit Card Secure Online

Tips For Keeping Your Credit Card Secure Online

As the holiday season approaches, more consumers will be turning to the Internet to do their shopping.  While there are numerous rules and regulations in place to protect credit card information while shopping online, it is important to be alert and cautious on where you submit your credit card information.

Here are some simple tips on online credit card safety:

Only Submit To Trusted Sources

Websites of large businesses can be hacked, but they are typically much more secure in the handling of sensitive information than smaller businesses.  When shopping on sites like Amazon, Apple, BestBuy, and other large retailers, your credit card data is almost always safe and secure.  However when shopping on small business websites, make sure they are using a trusted payment processing company such as Authorize.net, Chase Paymentech, Bank of America Merchant Services or PayPal.

Only Submit Credit Cards To Secure Pages

Most websites start with “http”. However secure websites start with “https”.  The “s” means you are on a secure page of the site. Whenever you provide sensitive information or your credit card number, make sure you are submitting it to a page with the “https”.  This will ensure your credit card data is safely transmitted from your computer to the company’s website.

Monitor Your Statement After Online Shopping

It’s easy to lose track of a few dollars on your statement when doing large amounts of holiday shopping. Make sure you keep your receipts and confirmation emails so you can check those against your credit card statement. You first want to ensure that the amount you should have been charged is the actual amount on your bill. Then, you want to check for any duplicate transactions or other types of errors. Finally, you want to make sure you don’t have any unauthorized transactions on your cards.

When Shopping Online With Debit Cards, Never Reveal Your Pin

Your pin should only be used when you enter it in person at a retailer or at an ATM. Online shopping does not require a pin and you should never provide your pin to another person or a website.  If a website or merchant asks for your pin online, that should be a red flag to leave that site immediately and not provide them with any further information.

Know You’re Safe When Shopping Online

An important thing to remember when shopping online is nearly every credit card offers fraud protection. Always take safeguards to avoid your identity or credit card information being stolen. However, it is good to know that your credit card company should cover you for any fraud on your account.

Online shopping is generally safe and secure, but following these steps will give you added peace of mind and help keep your confidential information secure.
