Shopify Launches Credit Card Reader for Brick and Mortar Stores

Shopify is an online sales platform and payment processor, but its latest venture is designed for offline purchases. The company announced the launch of a new chip card reader designed for brick and mortar stores, which will compete head-on with the Square reader.

The Chip & Swipe Reader works with EMV chipped cards and magnetic strip cards. It is wireless and can connect to most smartphones or tablets using Bluetooth. Each transaction comes with a 2.4% processing fee, which is lower than Square’s 2.75%.

In September 2015, Shopify debuted its contactless payment reader, which is still available for $89. The new version does not accept contactless payments, and is only available for pre-order at this time. New customers can receive a free reader, but existing Shopify POS users pay $29 for the product.

Small and medium sized businesses can use Shopify for online and offline sales. They no longer need a separate platform for their ecommerce site and their brick and mortar store. Business owners can view their transaction histories and sales data from both sources on one dashboard, and can take their card readers wherever they go.

The chip reader has a durable battery that can last for 400 chip card transactions or 700 magnetic strip swipes. It comes with a charging base and a travel case, and pairs seamlessly with Shopify’s software and online support features.
