Pharrell Williams Named Creative Director for American Express Platinum

December 21, 2016, Written By Lynn Oldshue

Pharrell Williams is well known for his music and oversized hats, but the Grammy-winning artist is taking on a new role now—creative director for the American Express Platinum Card. Pharrell will now be in charge of creating new designs for the Platinum card, as well as helping create benefits and services that will appeal to modern-day consumers.

Credit card designs may seem a little out-of-the-ordinary for Pharrell, but there is one part of the job where he is sure to excel. The musician will be in charge of selecting music for American Express airport lounges across the country, giving him a chance to express his taste in music to a new audience.

This is not the first time American Express has used a celebratory endorser in a unique way. Tina Fey stars in current commercials, where she uses her rewards card to get just about anything imaginable in various stores. Other celebrity partnerships include Sheryl Crow, Alicia Keys, and Ellen DeGeneres. However, most of them were used purely as a face in a commercial, not an integral role in company operations. Pharrell will have an important say in the development of the Platinum card in the upcoming year.

AmEx did not disclose how much money they are paying Pharrell for his services. But this is in contrast from the announcement earlier this year that the company would be cutting costs by $1 billion in 2017.
