PayPal Debit Cards Offer Cash Back

September 4, 2013, Written By Lynn Oldshue

I have loyally used my PayPal Debit MasterCard for three years, and I recently got a new one in the mail. When I went to activate it on my account, I noticed a little button below the confirmation that said “Enroll now”. Apparently PayPal offers a cash back program for their debit cards, and I had no idea this feature existed.

If I, a seasoned PayPal card user, did not know about this, chances are other users don’t know as well. If you sign up for the cash back program, you can get 1% cash back on all purchases you run as credit. You can also get cash back for online purchases and anything else you don’t need a PIN for.

Enrolling in the program is free, and it doesn’t change much about your card at all. Just consciously run your purchases as credit instead of debit, and you can get extra money to spend at the end of the month.

The reason PayPal can afford this kind of rewards program is because it makes additional revenue from the merchants when you run a charge as credit. This works in your favor because it essentially gives you a discount on all credit purchases.

I’ve racked up a whopping $1.45 in rewards within the past week, which may not sound like much in the grand scheme of things. However, if you’re like me and use your card all the time, this is an added bonus you have no reason to miss out on.

Log into your PayPal account and go to Profile > My Money > Update (next to PayPal Debit MasterCard® BusinessCard Summary) > Enroll. Then you can start earning cash back right away.
