Mobile Payments Booming at Starbucks

October 11, 2012, Written By Bill Hardekopf

Starbucks continues to be a retail leader in the mobile payment industry.

Last week, it was announced that the company has surpassed 70 million mobile payment transactions since it introduced its mobile payment app at the beginning of 2011.

The company’s mobile app is also integrated with Apple’s Passbook. This allows a patron’s Starbuck Card to automatically appear on the screen of their iPhone or iPad when entering a Starbucks store.

Starting in November, Starbucks will enable customers to pay using Square Wallet.

Next summer, the baristas will be able to receive tips via the Starbucks mobile payment app or with Square Wallet.

Starbucks invested $25 million in Square as reported by CNET in August
