HBO Data Breach Includes Scripts and Internal Documents

HBO Data Breach Includes Scripts and Internal Documents

August 4, 2017         Written By John H. Oldshue

Just as many were settling in for the new episode of Game of Thrones Sunday night, scripts for that show and other popular HBO shows, such as Ballers, Insecure, and Room 104, began leaking online. An internal investigation has revealed the hackers may also have stolen thousands of internal company documents.

The hackers claim to have 1.5 TB of data from HBO. If true, this would be about seven times larger than Sony Entertainment’s 2014 breach. In the Sony attack, hackers claimed to have stolen 100 TB of data, but they only released 200 GB online. To put these numbers into context, Ajay Arora, CEO of security firm Vera, told Hollywood Reporter that “The entire Library of Congress is estimated to contain 10 terabytes of print content. As such, it’s hard to believe that video and/or audio are not part of what was stolen.”

In an email to Wired, the hackers claim to have targeted HBO specifically and promise more content will follow this initial dump. “We successfully penetrated HBO’s huge network and gathered most imporatnt [sic] files and films & scripts and so on.” The hacker also told the publication that they “obtained alot [sic] about HBO’s staff and internal stuff.”

HBO chairman Richard Plepler has assured staff that the full email system was not compromised in the attack, but he did not deny that some emails were exposed. In fact, in the hacker’s first data dump, top HBO executive’s personal data, including access credentials for online services, was among the information released.

The company is working with the FBI and cybersecurity firm Mandiant to investigate the breach.
