Firefox Monitor Alerts Users of Data Breaches
Mozilla has released a new product, Firefox Monitor, which makes it easier for users to discover if they have been victims of a data breach. The service compiles data from Have I Been Pwned, a database run by Australian security researcher Troy Hunt, and alerts users if their email address or password has been exposed.
Hunt gathers information for Have I Been Pwned by analyzing data dumps across the Dark Web. On the website, a user can search for their email address to see if they may have been a victim of a breach. Hunt recently added a feature to allow users to see if their password is listed on the Dark Web as well.
Firefox Monitor allows users to see if their information is on the Pwned website from their browser, and can opt-in to email alerts.
1Password, a password management system, is already linked to Have I Been Pwned. Once a password has been saved to their system, a user can take advantage of their Watchtower system to see if the password has been compromised. Watchtower is currently available in 1Password’s web-based platform, but the company is also working on a desktop app.
Both of these programs offer a valuable service to users. Since email addresses and passwords are regularly stolen from breached websites, it is a good idea to stay aware of which websites are at-risk. If a user sees through Firefox Monitor or 1Password Watchtower that their log-in credentials are exposed, they can quickly change their log-in information to avoid having their account compromised.
