Discover Introduces Credit Cards with an On/Off Switch

Yesterday, Discover took a step in making their credit cards more secure by giving consumers the ability to temporarily turn off their accounts when their card is lost.

The “Freeze It” feature, a first in the card industry, will help prevent any new purchases, balance transfers or cash advances from taking place, but recurring charges previously set up will be processed.

Consumers can implement the on/off feature online, through the Discover app or by calling 1-800-DISCOVER.

“We’re giving card members a fast and simple security feature that gives them more control over their accounts and more peace of mind if a card goes missing,” Julie Loeger, senior vice president of marketing, said in a statement.

This new feature is primarily to be used when a card has been temporarily misplaced, not necessarily for stolen cards or those involved in a data breach.
