Reviewing The Walmart MoneyCard

The Walmart MoneyCard is a reloadable prepaid debit card designed for avid Walmart shoppers. The card will not help you build credit since it is a debit card, so it doesn’t report your activity to the major credit bureaus. Like any prepaid debit card, it comes with some fees which can add up. But this card has some nice rewards if you are a frequent Walmart shopper. The card is issued by Green Dot Bank.

Main Benefits Of The Walmart MoneyCard

The most attractive feature of the card is the cash rewards you can earn by shopping at Walmart. You will earn 3% cash back on all purchases on Walmart.com, 2% on transactions at Murphy USA or Walmart fuel stations, and 1% on any purchases at Walmart stores. There is a maximum of $75 in cash back rewards that can be earned in a 12-month period.

Just about anybody can get this card since applicants do not need a bank account and a credit check will not take place. You can use the card wherever Mastercard debit cards are accepted.

The card costs $1 to purchase in person at a Walmart, but is free if you do so online. There are no annual fees, overdraft fees or inactivity fees on this card.

Cardholders can get free cash withdrawals at a Walmart store. However, cash withdrawals will cost money if made at a bank or ATM (plus any ATM operator fees).

Main Drawbacks Of The Walmart MoneyCard

The biggest negative about the card is the monthly fee. The fee can be avoided if you load at least $1,000 onto your card during that month.

Reloading funds on to the Walmart MoneyCard can cost money if loaded at Walmart Checkout or at retailers in the Green Dot network. However, there are no fees from direct deposits or government benefits.

Who The Walmart MoneyCard Is Right For

Consumers who are frequent Walmart shoppers can earn up to $75 in cash back every 12 months if they make enough purchases. However, the monthly fees charged on the account will almost wipe out all of these potential rewards. If you can make a direct deposit of at least $1,000 each month, you can avoid both the monthly fee and the reload fee. In that case, the card would be beneficial to obtain. If you have to incur the monthly fee every month, there would be very little benefit to the card.
