Best Ways to Redeem Amex Points

Best Ways to Redeem Amex Points

July 23, 2019         Written By Bill Hardekopf

One of the benefits of carrying an American Express card is that the company offers reward points for every dollar you spend with their card. For instance, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express gives card members 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) and 35,000 bonus miles after they spend $1,000 in purchases within the first three months of opening the account. After that, cardholders earn two miles for every dollar spent with Delta and one mile per dollar on every other purchase.

Once you have acquired these points with your American Express card, what are the best ways to redeem them? With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card, you will get the biggest bang by booking flights with Delta using your points, but you have other options with all AmEx cards.

Redeem Points for Statement Credits

One of easiest ways to redeem your points is to apply them to pay your monthly balance. You can use this option via your online account or the mobile app.

Use the Points on Amazon

You can link your rewards account to your Amazon account and then use the points to make purchases. If you often shop Amazon, and if you are a Prime member who enjoys free shipping, this could be an excellent way to purchase items via the online retailer.

Purchase Gift Cards

Through your American Express online account, you can also redeem points for gift cards, which may be a good option if you need to purchase a small gift for employees, friends or family members.

Enjoy Free Uber Rides

You can also use your AmEx rewards points to pay for Uber rides. However, your points are only worth about a penny each, so it may be a better value to pay for your ride in other ways and save your valuable points for larger rewards.

Book with Singapore Airlines

If you’re planning an international trip, save those points to enjoy a premium class flight. For example, you can pay for a first class, round trip flight from Singapore to Sydney for about 80,000 rewards points or JFK to Frankfurt for 76,000 points.

Stay at Choice Hotels

Going to Europe? Choice Hotels offers a one-to-one exchange rate for American Express rewards points. While you will have to book nights offered for rewards, you can enjoy luxury hotel stays for as little as 8,000 to 25,000 points per night.

Book a Flight

Don’t need a luxurious vacation overseas? American Express also grants Business Platinum card members a 35% discount on any flight with any airline when the air fare is purchased with rewards points. If you often fly for work, this could be a great option for enjoying less expensive flights.

Final Thoughts

Before you redeem your points, do some homework and think about how to get the most benefit for your hard-earned rewards. If you know you’re taking an expensive vacation within the next year, don’t waste your points on Uber rides or gift cards. However, if you rarely travel, feel free to use your points on statement credits or for Amazon purchases.
