Apple Pay Now Works at Exxon and Mobil Gas Stations
Consumers can now use Apple Pay to pay at the pump, thanks to new developments from ExxonMobil. The company has expanded its Speedpass+ iPhone app to allow for payments through Apple Pay.
The new mobile wallet feature is available at 6,100 Exxon and Mobil gas stations in the United States. The company says that number will reach 8,000 by the middle of the year, and all 10,000+ locations by the end of 2016.
Incorporating Apple Pay into the existing mobile app provides an extra layer of security for folks who want to pay at the pump. Rather than using their phones to pay directly at the pump, users can complete their payments safely inside their vehicles. The Speedpass+ app will use the phone’s location setting to figure out which fueling station the customer is using. When the payment options pull up, users can select Apple Pay or any of the other options already on the app.
This approach to Apple Pay incorporation allowed ExxonMobil to save a significant amount of money while still upgrading to the latest payment technology. They did not have to replace or update the software on thousands of fuel pumps. Instead, they just tweaked their app to give their customers this new payment option.
In addition to using Apple Pay for gas, Exxon and Mobil customers can also use their mobile wallets to pay for car washes via Speedpass+.
